Host families

The Slovak host families are volunteers: they do not get any financial compensation for hosting an exchange student. But they are very motivated in showing the student the Slovak life, the way the Slovak families live, communicate, spend spare time together and share their privacy. The host families are carefully selected by trained YFU staff – the families are trained and informed as well. We hope the match between students and families is being done in the very best way so that both families and students will have a beautiful year.

YFU Slovakia does not select the families based on regional preference: you can spend your year or semester in Košice or in Plevník – we feel that much more important than a region is to have a family that you do match the best with. If you are in a bigger town or in a small village does not make the year better or worse – it’s the family that is the most important placing criteria.

Each student and host family have an area representative, at YFU Slovakia called tutor. Tutor comes from the region as the host family does and is there to help in case of any problem. Of course, YFU Slovakia office is always there for you if you might need any help as well.
